Course Overview

This comprehensive periodic occupational health and safety (BHP) training course is designed specifically for restaurant and food service workers. Based on Polish BHP (Bezpieczeństwo i Higiena Pracy) periodic training standards, this course covers everything you need to know to stay safe on the job — from understanding your legal rights and responsibilities to handling emergencies, identifying workplace hazards, and preventing accidents in a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Chapter 1: What Is Workplace Health and Safety?

Learn the fundamentals of workplace health and safety, including the meaning of BHP, the legal basis for safety rules, work regulations, and the purpose of periodic safety training.

Chapter 2: Who Is Responsible for Safety?

Explore the specific duties of employers, supervisors, BHP officers, and employees under Polish labour law. Learn about supervisory bodies, the right to refuse dangerous work, and penalties for breaking safety rules.

Chapter 3: Hazards in the Restaurant Workplace

Identify the full range of hazards found in restaurant environments — physical hazards, noise, vibration, chemical and electrical hazards, dust, biological hazards, lighting requirements, and psychosocial hazards including stress and burnout.

Chapter 4: Manual Handling — Lifting, Carrying, and Moving

Back injuries are the most common cause of workplace absences. This chapter covers proper posture, legal weight limits for all worker categories, rules for safe manual handling, and special restrictions for young workers.

Chapter 5: Slips, Trips, Falls, and Working at Height

Understand the common causes of falls in restaurants, requirements for floors and walkways, door and gate safety, staircase and ramp requirements, safety measures for working at height, and proper storage and racking practices.

Chapter 6: Forklift and Lifting Equipment Safety

Learn forklift operating rules, safe load handling procedures, elevator and goods lift rules, and pedestrian safety requirements in areas with vehicle movement.

Chapter 7: Risk Assessment

Learn what occupational risk is, when a risk assessment is required by law, and what a proper risk assessment contains. Every workplace must evaluate the risks its workers face.

Chapter 8: Workplace Accidents

Understand what legally counts as a workplace accident, the different types and categories of accidents, what to do after an accident occurs, how causes are investigated, compensation and benefits, and when compensation is refused.

Chapter 9: Occupational Disease

Some health problems develop slowly from repeated exposure at work. Learn to recognize occupational diseases, understand the reporting process, and be aware of carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic substances in the workplace.

Chapter 10: Parental Rights at Work

Polish labour law provides a range of rights specifically protecting workers who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have young children. Learn about maternity, parental, and paternity leave, nursing breaks, childcare days, and work restrictions.

Chapter 11: First Aid

In the first minutes after an emergency, your response can save a life. This chapter covers your legal duty to help, required first aid equipment, the chain of survival, step-by-step response to an unconscious person, and proper burn treatment.

Chapter 12: Fire Safety and Evacuation

Restaurants are among the most fire-prone workplaces. Learn about the fire triangle, common causes of kitchen fires, what to do if you discover a fire, evacuation procedures, and how to select and use the correct fire extinguisher.

Chapter 13: Discrimination, Harassment, and Workplace Bullying

The law protects workers from mistreatment as well as physical harm. Understand equal treatment principles, recognize workplace bullying (mobbing) and sexual harassment, and learn how to report and prevent these problems.

Chapter 14: Medical Examinations and Protective Equipment

Two pillars of a safe workplace are regular medical checks and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Learn about the three types of medical examinations, PPE requirements, and protective clothing standards.

Chapter 15: Ergonomics and Working Conditions

Ergonomics is the science of designing work to fit the worker. This chapter covers posture considerations including text neck, workspace requirements, and the risks of repetitive motion and static load that lead to long-term injury.

Chapter 16: Review Questions

Test your understanding with review questions covering law and responsibilities, hazards and risk, manual handling, accidents and first aid, fire safety, forklifts, parental rights, and other key topics from the course.
